The Startup

A self-funded education-based startup was bleeding money–to the tune of five figures a month, every month. The CEO stated at the onset, “I need someone to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk and help us out.” NOT a typical consulting client for me or my team, we wanted to see if and how components of our growth framework could turn this startup around.  Product/Market fit was solid but mindset, culture, people and processes were amiss.

Although still a work in progress, within 60 days, we staunched the negative cash flow by addressing the components of StoryVesting and the 3Ps.  This experiment/experience served as motivation to take our offline content—delivered through our workshops and consulting—and move it online so that more companies could benefit from a proven and grounded growth model.

Which approach is more likely to work?

I have this cool widget, so I’m going to build a business around it and I’m going to sell it at XYZ department store. I have to sell each one for at least $X, because I want to make $y per sale, and my spreadsheet says it will cost me $Z to produce.

I’ve identified a market for this widget. My ideal customer usually shops at ABC, so that’s where I want to sell. She’s price conscious, so the cost can’t exceed $X. So I’m looking for ways to source my raw materials at $Y, and I’ve locked in manufacturing costs at $Z.

When you look at it like that, it’s pretty obvious that B is the way to go. So why do most companies start with A? In marketing-speak, A is called the company-centric model. It’s all ME, ME, ME.
